Until I started doing newborn photos for other people, I never realized you could have a huge case of baby fever when you have a baby at home. And I really didn’t think it could happen with a baby at home that still doesn’t sleep at eleven months old. But, here we are. Just over a week ago I met sweet baby Prairie and her family, and sure enough within five minutes of meeting her, I was thinking of ways to convince my husband another baby was a good idea. I’ve since calmed down a little. But this session of newborn photography in Abbotsford had me dreaming of another baby girl for a few days!

Prairie was welcome by her mama, daddy and big brother, Kai. At two-years-old, Kai didn’t have too much patience for photos, but he sure was excited about his little sister. It was getting close to nap time for him, so he spent a good portion of our session with a stuffed animal snuggled close, or asking for a snack. That is, until we asked him if he wanted to hold Prairie. His face lit up and he was so proud sitting there with mom, holding his baby sister. He kept giving her kisses and little hugs, all the while beaming from ear-to-ear.

Mom, Karissa and Dad, Paul love to travel. This passion is displayed all over their home in maps and different art work, particularly in Kai’s room. As I photographed their family, Karissa told me about the places they had travelled and some of their favourites, and how both her children’s names were inspired by places that are important to them.

This family was so warm and their love for their new little girl was just so evident. It was such a pleasure to be able to capture them welcoming their sweet little girl to their family and pouring their love out on her.

Mama and her brand new baby in Abbotsford, BC

I recommend for all newborn sessions that baby has their own space to capture a few photos in. Prairies room was perfect. I love that lifestyle newborn photography isn’t just about capturing a baby at it’s tiniest. It’s about the love the family has for each other and their newest addition. It’s about the home they’ve built together, and the beautiful space they’ve planned, curated and painstakingly set up to create a safe and welcoming first home.
