How Often Should You Update Family Photos on Your Walls?
Family photographs become part of the rhythm of home. They hang quietly on the walls while life unfolds around them — reminding you of the people you love most and the season of life you’re living right now.
You pass them in the hallway on the way to the kitchen.
Your children glance at them as they run by.
They sit quietly in the background while everyday life continues.
Over time, those images begin to tell the story of your family.
Naturally, as children grow and life changes, many parents begin to wonder: how often should you update family photos on your walls?
For most families, refreshing portraits every two to three years allows the artwork in their home to grow alongside the life unfolding inside it.
Most families update their family portraits every two to three years. This timeline allows children to grow and personalities to change while keeping the photographs displayed in your home current and meaningful.
Over time, those portraits become something even more special — a quiet timeline of your family’s story.

Portraits capture more than appearances. They preserve connection.
The way your child leans into you.
The way siblings laugh together.
The subtle ways relationships evolve.
Childhood, however, changes faster than we expect.
Within a few years:
toddlers become preschoolers
baby teeth disappear
heights stretch upward
personalities grow stronger and more expressive
And before you realize it, the children in those photographs have grown again.
Refreshing portraits every few years allows the artwork in your home to continue reflecting the present season of your family — not just the one from several chapters ago.
One of my favourite examples of this happened with a couple I photographed several years ago.
At the time, they were expecting their first child. We created a maternity session together and from it they selected two beautiful pieces of artwork for their home.
Those images reflected anticipation — the quiet excitement of waiting to meet their baby.
About a year later, their world looked very different.
Their baby had arrived, they had moved into their forever home, and their little one was no longer just a newborn but a curious toddler beginning to explore.
During that next session we created two additional pieces of artwork.
Rather than replacing their maternity portraits, they chose to hang one of the new images in their main hallway between the original photographs.
Together, the images told a beautiful story — a visual timeline of their family moving from anticipation into parenthood.
Moments like that are why updating portraits every few years becomes so meaningful.
Portraits become anchors in the story of your family.
Sometimes families know instinctively when it’s time for new portraits. Other times, the signs appear quietly.
You might consider updating your portraits when:
Your children look noticeably different
Childhood moves quickly, and within a few years children can look completely different from the portraits displayed on your wall.
Your home has changed
A move or a newly redesigned space often creates the perfect opportunity to refresh the artwork in your home.
Your family has grown
A new baby, adoption, or blended family moment naturally deserves a place in your family portraits.
Your photographs no longer feel like this season of life
Sometimes it’s simply a feeling — that the images on your walls belong to an earlier chapter.
Updating portraits every few years allows your artwork to remain connected to the life unfolding around it.

Digital images are wonderful for sharing. Printed portraits, however, hold a different kind of meaning.
Displayed photographs:
remind children they belong
reinforce family identity
create warmth within your home
become part of your family’s legacy
Research has even shown that children who grow up seeing family photographs displayed in their homes often develop a stronger sense of belonging.
Refreshing those portraits every few years keeps those reminders present.
And visible.
And meaningful.
Refreshing portraits doesn’t mean replacing every photograph you love.
Many families prefer to allow their wall art to evolve gradually.
Some choose to rotate a single statement portrait. Others add new images alongside older ones, creating a timeline that shows their children growing.
Sometimes even adjusting frames or rearranging a gallery wall can bring new life to existing photographs.
Over time, those portraits begin to feel like chapters in the story of your family.
When families update their portraits, many choose studio sessions because the images feel timeless and cohesive.
Studio photography offers:
soft, flattering light
calm environments for children
neutral backgrounds that suit many homes
consistency between sessions
Because the setting remains simple, new portraits often blend beautifully with images taken years earlier.

Most families refresh their portraits every two to three years so their photographs reflect the current stage of their children and family life.
Not necessarily. Many families keep favourite images and add new portraits over time, creating a gallery that grows alongside their family.
Many families choose meaningful transitions such as welcoming a new baby, beginning school, or moving into a new home.
They don’t have to match exactly. However, neutral styling and studio sessions often help new portraits blend naturally with older ones.
So how often should you update family photos on your walls?
For most families, refreshing portraits every two to three years creates the perfect balance. It allows your home to reflect the present season of your life while preserving the beautiful story of how your family grows over time.
Over the years, those images become something more than photographs.
They become part of your home.
Part of your history.
And part of the story your children will one day look back on.
