How to Prepare for Your In-Home Family Photo Session (Without Stressing About the Mess)

The Truth About In-Home Sessions? Your Home Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect

If you’ve ever hesitated to book an in-home family photo session because your house doesn’t look like a magazine, you’re not alone. Many Vancouver families love the idea of cozy, lifestyle portraits—but worry that their lived-in space won’t look “photo ready.”

Here’s the truth: perfection isn’t the point. Connection is.

As an in-home family photographer in Vancouver, I’m not looking for spotless surfaces or perfectly styled decor. I’m looking for love, laughter, and everyday magic. And that doesn’t require a deep clean.

What to Actually Tidy (and What to Leave Be)

Tidy This:

  • Clear a few surfaces in areas we’ll likely use (beds, couches, windows with natural light)
  • Remove clutter from the background like tissue boxes, snack bags, or electronics cords
  • Make beds with neutral bedding if using bedrooms (layered blankets = bonus texture!)

Ignore This:

  • Toy baskets in the corner
  • A little laundry in the hallway
  • Kitchen counters that aren’t showroom-perfect

We’re documenting real life—not staging for a magazine. And often, the warmth of your space is what makes the photos feel so timeless.

How to Prep Your Family Without Stressing Them Out

You don’t need to rehearse or bribe. Here’s what works:

  • Dress comfortably: Stick to soft, neutral-toned clothing that allows movement and cuddles
  • Prep a favourite snack or comfort item: A small break mid-session keeps toddlers happy
  • Set expectations lightly: Let your kids know someone is coming to play and take photos—not to “pose” or perform

The goal is for everyone to feel relaxed and themselves. I guide you through gentle prompts, not stiff instructions.
